Illegal electric fence kills forest guard in Assam

first_imgAn illegal electric fence put up by encroachers in the Nameri National Park to keep elephants away has claimed the life of a forest guard in northcentral Assam’s Sonitpur district.The 200 sq km Nameri is a tiger reserve. Park officials said Biren Chandra Deka was electrocuted on Sunday night when he, along with another guard, was proceeding to the Nameri anti-poaching camp from the range office. “The route is through an encroached area in the buffer zone of Nameri National Park near 12th Mile of Bhalukpong (on the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border,” said P. Sivakumar, Chief Conservator of Forests of the Northern Assam Circle. Mr. Deka did not notice the fence in the dark.
