The BCCI has formed a special committee to look into India’s debacle on the England tour, the board announced on Monday.N. Srinivasan, who took over as the new president of BCCI, said the Indian team will bounce back from its defeat in England. “We have had just one bad series,” he said.India’s first World Cup winning team member Mohinder Amarnath, who once called the selection committee a bunch of jokers, and former Indian captain Anil Kumble will head the panel. Earlier, sources told Headlines Today that Amarnath might replace Yashpal Sharma as the representative from the north zone in the BCCI selection committee.Srinivasan also clarified that the Indian team had not received any specific invitation in London for the ICC Awards event that had created quite a row after M.S. Dhoni’s men skipped the ceremony. The BCCI chief also said former captain Sourav Ganguly will replace Sunil Gavaskar as the technically committee head. “We are yet to get his (Sourav’s) consent. I hope he agrees,” Srinivasan said.
Ahmedabad, Oct 6 (PTI) The Kabaddi World Cup is all set to begin here tomorrow, with organisers and players of competing countries today expressing confidence of taking the game to new heights of popularity across the globe. Addressing the media at a pre-event press conference, International Kabaddi Federation chief Deoraj Chaturvedi said that 12 out of 32 Kabaddi playing countries will participate in the fortnight-long tournament, which will be concluding on October 22. The game, which begins tomorrow at a new multi-purpose stadium, TransStadia, built here under a public private partnership. “Twelve wonderful teams from five Olympic geographies will clash with each other. Another big milestone is that it will be played at a World Cup facilitated stadium TransStadia here, which has come up here in such a short time,” he said. “Kabaddi is our (Indias) own game and I take that today it is played in 32 countries, out of which 12 countries are participating,” he said. The 12 participating teams are India, UAE, England, Australia, Iran, Poland, Thailand, Bangladesh, South Korea, Japan, Argentina, and Kenya. The tournament, being organised by the International Kabaddi Federation, will be broadcast live in 120-odd countries by Star Sports, which will be a first for a kabaddi tournament, Chaturvedi said. “It is for the first time that kabaddi will be showcased and exposed to the world, and I am sure this World Cup will create a history and will help us promoting the game throughout the world,” he said. Twelve teams have been divided into two pools of six teams each with inaugural matches being played tomorrow between India and South Korea, and United States and Iran. Speaking about the tournament, India team captain Anup Kumar accepted that there is pressure due to the presence of worlds best teams. “It is a big tournament and all teams are very good, some teams are new and playing with them will be a new experience, and I believe there is pressure. Our only target is to keep the trophy in the country,” he said. Speaking at the press conference, Anupam Goswami, head of kabaddi at Star Sports, said that the World Cup will further popularise the game across the world, after a successful show of Pro-Kabaddi League. “We strongly believe that in one of these days we will see India as a powerhouse of sports beyond cricket. Pro Kabaddi League is the second most viewed league after IPL, and we will expand it further in the coming years,” he said. “We hope to make as much an impact for Kabaddi across the world by this tournament as we did for the country with with pro Kabaddi,” he added. ST. PAUL, Alta. – It was a supercalifragilisticexpialidocious find.A first-edition hardcover book of “Mary Poppins,” published in 1934, is back in an Alberta public library after 40 years.Dwayne Olson with the library in St. Paul, a town northeast of Edmonton, says the book was taken off the shelves in 1978 and replaced with newer versions. The copy was recently donated back to the library after being discovered at a local thrift store.“I was surprised,” says Olson. “It’s in pretty good shape.”The book was the first of eight in a series by P.L. Travers about a magical, umbrella-toting nanny that spawned a Disney movie and stage musicals.Olson says the library’s copy is a bit faded. And it’s spine needs to be fixed. He’s not sure how much it’s worth, but it’s not for sale.“To have this book in our library, I mean, it’s priceless,” says Olson, “especially for people to look at and see it and kind of go, ‘Oh, that’s cool.’”The book is being displayed in a locked glass cabinet with other old texts.People can ask to see the book, but they won’t be allowed to check it out.“It doesn’t leave the library,” says Olson.

Kent DriscollAPTN NewsPaul Quassa has been voted out as premier of Nunavut during a recall motion Thursday.Under Nunavut’s consensus government system, regular members can remove a premier with a majority vote. Now that Quassa is out, the Members of the legislative assembly will meet later Thursday afternoon to discuss the next steps.Given Nunavut is not allowed to be without a premier, a leadership forum is likely to follow soon. While previous premiers in Nunavut have faced similar leadership reviews part way through their term, this is the first time a recall vote has been debated in the territory’s assembly. It is also the earliest a premier has faced such a challenge – Quassa only took office in November 2017.Quassa’s government has faced questions on spending throughout this term, the highest profile one being the Northern Lights Trade Show spending. The Nunavut Government spent $570,000 to send 73 staff and officials to the bi-annual trade show in Ottawa.Part of that tab was a $7,000 car service to shuttle the Premier around Ottawa.Regular members, the de facto opposition under Nunavut’s consensus system of no political parties, have questioned the spending.Quassa defended the expense in the assembly, saying “you have to spend money to make money” and calling the meetings in Ottawa important for the government to establish relationships and pursue funding. He defended the car service by pointing out that in order to access Parliament Hill by car, you need a service with a level of security clearance.Another spending issue has been front and center in this recent assembly sitting, this one about money not spent. The current government pulled funding for a proposed road connecting Grays Bay, Nunavut to an existing mining road in the Northwest Territories. While initially claiming that the federal government denied funding first, it has come out in the assembly that the Nunavut government was the first to reverse course on the 227 km all season road. The project had moved ahead under Peter Taptuna’s time as premier, but died under Quassa’s.Taptuna is from the Kitikmeot region in western Nunavut where the road would be created.Quassa is from Baffin Island in the east, and western MLAs have become frustrated with what they perceive as the abandonment of a vital economic driver for the region.Finance Minister Joe Savikataaq defended the decision as the new government sticking to its priorities, saying in the Assembly, “all our money comes from one pot. If we spend here, we have none for there.”The motion to remove was made Tuesday morning by Arviat MLA John Main, on behalf of the Regular Member’s Caucus. There are 13 members of that caucus, and only 8 members of the cabinet including Premier Quassa. While those numbers may be daunting to Quassa, Nunavut politicians have a history of letting them continue.Nunavut’s three previous premiers, Paul Okalik, Eva Aariak and Peter Taptuna, have all faced leadership reviews at the request of the assembly. All three held on as premier. The difference, in this case, is that those reviews were held halfway through their term as a legislated part of the consensus system. This review is unique as it is the earliest and the first ever presented as a recall vote.If successful on Thursday, the vote would trigger an immediate leadership forum where a new premier would be chosen.
HUMBOLDT, Tenn. – Tyson Foods Inc. plans to build a new chicken production complex in Tennessee, a $300 million project that is expected to create more than 1,500 jobs when the facility begins operations in late 2019, the company said Monday. The new plant in Humboldt will produce pre-packaged trays of fresh chicken for retail grocery stores nationwide, the Springdale, Arkansas-based company said in a statement and a news conference. The plant will help it meet strong consumer demand for its chicken, the company said. Construction is expected to begin within three to six months.Tennessee Gov. Bill Haslam and U.S. Sen. Bob Corker attended the news conference and praised Tyson for choosing Humboldt, a rural city of about 8,200 people located about 85 miles (135 kilometres) northeast of Memphis. Tennessee competed with other states for the project. Doug Ramsey, group president of poultry for Tyson, would not discuss which other states were in the mix.Officials said the local agriculture community will benefit from the project, providing supplies and feed for the plant, which will feature a hatchery, processing facility and feed mill. Tyson’s project will be built at a 500-acre (200-hectare) Gibson County industrial park that’s been seeking a tenant for about 20 years, county mayor Tom Witherspoon said.“It’s rare that you get a manufacturing project that has such an impact on our agriculture community,” Witherspoon said. “That’s what’s made it such a good project for Gibson County.”Ramsey said the existing industrial park, availability of labour and access to feed grains produced in the region, were reasons why Tyson chose Gibson CountyHaslam said that while unemployment in Tennessee is low — at 3 per cent as of September — “it’s no news that some of our rural counties have struggled.” He called the plant a “big deal” for the state.“Agriculture is a big part of who we are,” Haslam said. “So we combine our farmers’ ability to contribute to this facility with the jobs that will be located here.”Tyson currently operates four facilities in the state, employing about 5,000 people. The company says it paid Tennessee farmers more than $61 million in the 2016 fiscal year. The announcement marks the second major economic development project Tyson has begun this year in Tennessee. In August, the company announced an $84 million expansion of operations in Union City. That project is expected to create about 300 jobs. The company’s portfolio of products includes Tyson chicken, Jimmy Dean, Hillshire Farm and Ball Park.
New Delhi: Saudi Aramco, the world’s largest oil exporter, is in talks to buy stake in Reliance Industries’ oil refineries and petrochemical complex, sources privy to the development said. Aramco opened talks with Reliance as $44-billion mega refinery-cum-petrochemical complex, where it was taking a 50 per cent stake along with UAE’s ADNOC, got delayed after ruling BJP-government scrapped plans to acquiring land for the project in coastal Maharashtra. Also Read – Thermal coal import may surpass 200 MT this fiscalThe sources said talks have been going on for few months now but there is nothing concrete that has materialised just as yet. Reports suggested Aramco may take 25 per cent stake for $10-15 billion but sources discounted such a valuation saying market capitalisation of Reliance at Tuesday’s closing price on BSE was over Rs 8.5 lakh crore, at least half of which or Rs 4.25 lakh crore (about $60 billion) would be coming from refinery and petrochemical business. A 25 per cent stake would translate into $15 billion without even considering any premium of giving a firm a foothold into a well-established business in the world’s third largest energy consuming nation, they said.

For all the buzz about what Michael Phelps had not done, it is equally buzzing about what he accomplished on Tuesday in London. After a disappointing silver-medal placement in the 200-meter butterfly earlier Tuesday, Phelps returned to the water to anchor the history-making 200-freestyle relay team to the gold medal. The final 10 meters of the race were like the leaders of the Masters walking up the 18th fairway toward the green. It was a coronation.Phelps held onto a significant lead and delivered the United States another gold medal – the 15th of his career and the 19th time he has stood on an Olympic podiumHe’s now alone in the overall medal count, having broken a tie with Russian gymnast Larissa Latynina as the most-decorated athlete in the history of the Games.Phelps entered the night with 17 medals, wining silver in the 200-meter butterfly and then gold in the 4×200, swimming the two races a little over one hour apart.Shortly before Tuesday night’s swim meet, Latynina told Yahoo! Sports that the medals she also won as a coach still separate her from Phelps.“Do I think I am still the greatest Olympian?” she said in an interview translated by a Russian gymnastics federation official. “Why yes, but that is my opinion.“Why do I think this? Well, I did not only compete in three Olympic Games and won many medals, but the Soviet Union team had very great success when I was the coach.”Latynina won nine golds and 18 total medals in her career that spanned three Olympics, from 1956-64. The Soviet Union also claimed another 10 golds when she was coach during the 1970s. She also said Phelps has her respect.“It is special what he has done,” Latynina said.In a tribute to Phelps and recognizing the speed he showed in the 4×100 relay earlier in the games, U.S. coaches shuffled their 4×200 order, placing Phelps in the closing leg. It unfolded as dramatically as you would expect, with Ryan Lochte, Conor Dwyer and Ricky Berens giving Phelps a sizable lead going into the final 200-meters. Phelps went into the pool and was never challenged, stretching the lead in the first 150 meters and then going into the wall nearly 10-meters ahead of the French.
Ohio State sophomore forward Abdi Mohamed passes the ball upfield against Rutgers on Sept. 18, 2016. Credit: Gene Ross | For The LanternWith four of the next five games at home, the Ohio State men’s soccer team knew if they were going to turn their season around, now would have to be the time to do it.Against Big Ten opponent Rutgers, they got off on the right foot. The Buckeyes dominated this Sunday, taking down the Scarlet Knights 3-1 at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium, their second win in the last three games.“Especially with it being a Big Ten game, we took this very serious,” said Ohio State sophomore midfielder Abdi Mohamed. “We came out hard, we had a few chances. It was very important for us to come out strong and get this win.”OSU received a rude awakening in their last match against Penn State, leading to a 4-0 deficit in the first half. This time, the Buckeyes were ready right out of the gate.In just the 5th minute, Ohio State junior forward Nate Kohl received a through ball from senior forward Danny Jensen that Kohl buried inside the near post. It was his second goal of the season, which gave the Buckeyes an early 1-0 lead. Later in the first period, senior defender Austin Bergstrom received a penalty kick. Bergstrom was able to beat Rutgers senior goalkeeper David Greczek on the left side of the net to extend the lead to 2-0, which they would take into halftime.“The guys were very sharp in the first half. In the first twenty minutes we could have had several goals,” said coach John Bluem. “I thought our attacking play was very good. It was the positive start we wanted in the game.”Ohio State began the second half a bit sluggish.Just two minutes into the second period, Rutgers junior forward Ryan Peterson launched a corner kick to junior defender Niel Guzman, who was able to get his head on the ball and tuck it inside the far post to cut the Buckeyes lead to 2-1. It was Guzman’s first goal of the season.Just when it seemed as though momentum was shifting the way of the Scarlet Knights, Mohamed was given a free kick from 20 yards out in front of the net. Mohamed was able to arc it high into the top left corner of the net, beating the goalkeeper and putting the Buckeyes up 3-1.“They got a little bit of a reason to believe when we let them have a goal there early on. That is exactly what we didn’t want to do, of course,” Bluem said. “But another wonderful strike by Abdi. He can keep doing that all year long if he wants to. He is very good at those.”It was the first time this season Ohio State was able to score more than two goals in a game. For Mohamed, it was his second goal of the season, both coming on free kicks. The Buckeyes outshot Rutgers 16-7 in the game, holding an 11-2 advantage in shots in the first period. The team advanced to 2-1 in the Big Ten so far this season.“We are more confident right now,” Mohamed said. “We know we have to win and get on a stride. We trust each other. We believe in each other and we work hard for each other.”OSU will look to continue their winning ways this Wednesday, as they take on Valparaiso at 7 p.m. at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.
Courtesy of MCTThe LGBT rights movement seems to slowly but surely be making progress in the United States. Same-sex marriage is only legalized in nine states and the District of Columbia, but three of those states voted to legalize marriage in the 2012 elections. Meanwhile, the U.S. Supreme Court is currently debating the constitutionality of the Defense of Marriage Act and California’s Proposition 8, which both define marriage as only between a man and a woman. While many politicians, entertainment and TV personalities have revealed their homosexuality in recent years and have received widespread support from their peers, the world of sports, and in particular men’s sports, has not progressed as quickly. The civil rights movement toward LGBT acceptance within sports took a big step forward on Monday, when NBA center Jason Collins became the first active player to come out as gay in one of the four major U.S. professional sports leagues (NBA, NFL, MLB, NHL).“I’m a 34-year-old NBA center. I’m black. And I’m gay,” Collins wrote to open a cover story for Sports Illustrated that was published online Monday. In one sentence, Collins broke a longstanding barrier within men’s professional team sports. While there have been athletes in all four major sports leagues to reveal their homosexuality after retiring from professional sports, none has come out with the intent of continuing their career in professional sports.“I didn’t set out to be the first openly gay athlete playing in a major American team sport,” Collins wrote in Sports Illustrated. “But since I am, I’m happy to start the conversation.”Collins is a 12-year NBA veteran who has played for six different teams, has scored more than 2,500 points and grabbed more than 2,500 rebounds in his career, and is known for being a physical player — Collins led the NBA with 322 personal fouls for the 2004-05 season.Being gay didn’t stop him from doing any of that. There is one caveat in Collins’ status as an active professional athlete: he may never play another NBA game. As a member of two different teams (Boston Celtics and Washington Wizards) this season, he scored just 41 points in 38 games, and he will be a free agent this summer. It shouldn’t matter. The fact that Collins is revealing his homosexuality, having played in the NBA and still intending to play in the NBA, is a step forward in itself. Even more importantly, Collins has received support publicly from numerous current and former NBA star players, including Kobe Bryant, Jason Kidd, Shaquille O’Neal and Magic Johnson.“Jason’s sexuality doesn’t change the fact that he is a great friend and was a great teammate,” Kidd, who is currently a New York Knicks point guard and previously played for the New Jersey Nets with Collins, tweeted Monday.Collins’ supporters have ranged far and wide, also including Michelle Obama, former U.S. President Bill Clinton, Minnesota Vikings punter Chris Kluwe and former Columbus Crew soccer player Robbie Rogers, who came out as gay in February but also retired simultaneously.Kluwe is the co-author of an amicus brief titled “Athletes’ Brief,” along with NFL linebacker Brendon Ayanbadejo (who also tweeted his support for Collins on Monday), that was sent to the Supreme Court in March in petition opposing Proposition 8, and was signed by a number of professional athletes and sports-related figures who support marriage equality. The NFL has not had any active player come out as gay yet, but during an event at OSU on April 8, Kluwe said he thinks the issue will “blow over in a month or two” once one NFL player does come out as gay.“The first guy or guys that come out, yeah, there’s going to be some attention, but after that, no one will care,” Kluwe said. “Then it becomes, how well can you play football, which is the way it should be.”Now that a male professional athlete in a major sport has come out as gay, we get to find out whether the issue will “blow over” quickly.Earlier this month, Brittney Griner acknowledged her own homosexuality in an interview with Sports Illustrated after being the No. 1 overall pick in the 2013 WNBA Draft.“I’ve always been open about who I am and my sexuality. So, it wasn’t hard at all. If I can show that I’m out and I’m fine and everything’s OK, then hopefully the younger generation will definitely feel the same way,” Griner told Sports Illustrated.Griner’s acknowledgement did not receive nearly the attention that Collins’ story did on Monday. Women’s sports, however, has had a precedent of star athletes being openly gay, including three-time WNBA MVP Sheryl Swoopes and tennis legends Billie Jean King and Martina Navratilova.Regardless of whether Collins plays another NBA game or not, his revelation has set that precedent for male professional athletes.Between Collins, Griner and Rogers all acknowledging their homosexuality within the past three months, the hope is that more professional athletes who are closeted homosexuals will feel comfortable being open about their own sexuality.Furthermore, the support they have received from not only the sports community, but the community at large, should provide an inspiration for LGBT athletes at all levels to embrace who they are, and know that there are many members of the community who will support them for being who they are.If the current trend continues, we may not be too far removed from a nation where being a homosexual athlete is no longer a story, and we will be able to focus simply upon how well an athlete, regardless of their sexuality, can play their sport. That is, like Kluwe said, the way it should be.
Reinhard Grindel, the president of the German Football Association (DFB), believes the Mesut Ozil incident will not derail the Country’s Euro 2024 bid.The Arsenal playmaker retired from the national team over issues “racism and disrespect” after a disastrous World Cup campaignOzil took aim at Grindel in a statement announcing his retirement, saying that “in the eyes of Grindel and his supporters, I am German when we win, but I am an immigrant when we lose.”Grindel, however, brushed aside the accusations in the wake of his country’s bidHe said: “Everyone in the DFB and in UEFA knows me very well. I have profound trust that they can put this into perspective, so I think there will be no influence on the bidding process.”Merson believes Arsenal should sign Sancho Manuel R. Medina – September 14, 2019 Borussia Dortmund winger Jadon Sancho might be the perfect player to play for the Gunners, according to former England international Paul Merson.“In the end, it has nothing to do with whether a player of ours has a migration background or not,” he said.“If a German player would, in an election campaign, make a photo with, let’s say, a far right-wing politician in Germany, we would have the same debate, and we in the DFB would react in the same way.“We stand at the DFB for values: respect, tolerance, fair play, freedom of speech and freedom of press. This picture with Erdogan upset our fans because their President Erdogan doesn’t stand for those values.”UEFA will announce the host nation for Euro 2024 on September 27.

Both the English clubs are going to fight it out for the Champions League.ReutersLiverpool FC is going to battle it out against English rivals Tottenham Hotspurs in the 2019 Champions League Final at the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium in Madrid. This is the first instance of an all English Champions League Final since 2008 when Manchester United beat Chelsea in a penalty shootout after both teams could not break the deadlock in regular time. Both teams have had ups and downs throughout the tournament. The Reds made a memorable comeback from being 3-0 down against Barcelona to qualify with a 4-3 lead after winning the second leg at Anfield whereas the Lilywhites won due to a higher number of away goals against Ajax. When and where to watchThe Final begins at 9 PM local time and 12:30 AM (Thursday) IST. Viewers can catch the action live on Sony Six and Sony Six HD. For online viewers, Sony LIV will be the platform for live streaming.Preview Liverpool is looking forward to win the Champions League for the sixth time with their charismatic manager Jurgen Klopp at the helm. After losing to Real Madrid in last year’s edition, the Anfield-based side is waiting to taste victory at European level for the first time since 2005. They also lost the English Premier League title to Manchester City despite losing only one game in the entire season. The Red’s road to Madrid was not at all smooth. They had a rollercoaster journey this year. They were placed in a tough group along with teams like PSG and Napoli. Liverpool finished second in the group to meet Bayern Munich in the Round of 16, whom they beat 3-1 on aggregate score. Liverpool looking forward to end their European Cup droughtReutersTheir biggest challenge came against Barcelona FC in the semi-finals. The Lionel Messi-led side was in sublime form with the captain leading the way. After losing 3-0 at Camp Nou, the Reds made a near-impossible comeback in the second leg at home. They beat the Blaugrana 4-0 to march into the Finals. Klopp now has a full squad to pick from with Roberto Firminho back in the frame after he was confirmed fit.On the other hand, Tottenham Hotspur was placed in a much more difficult group than Liverpool along with Barcelona and Inter Milan. After the Lilywhites did not buy any new faces from the transfer window everybody thought they will exit the tournament in the group stage itself. But they proved all wrong and after facing many ups and downs throughout the season, the Mauricio Pochettino managed side made it to the Finals. Pochettino will hope that Kane will be fit for the match. On their way to the last hurdle before the trophy, they beat Manchester City in the quarterfinals 4-3 on aggregate score. The second fixture had a controversial VAR decision which helped Spurs greatly in going through to the semis. In the last-4 stage, they defeated a totally rejuvenated Ajax side on the basis of more away goals to set up a date with Liverpool. The situation of the squad is much better at this moment with Harry Kane, Jan Vertonghen, Harry Winks and Davinson Sanchez back in training.Liverpool have defeated Tottenham in this season’s Premier League twice, so they are the favourites. But it does not mean that Spurs will let them win easily. The Lilywhites will give their best to win the most coveted trophy in pan-European football.
