Exclusive – Liverpool starlet should NOT play for England Under-21s, insists Barnes

first_imgJohn Barnes says Stuart Pearce is wrong to suggest Raheem Sterling should play for the England Under-21 side. The Liverpool starlet has emerged as a key player for the senior side and looks certain to start against San Marino on Thursday night in the European Championship qualifier at Wembley,.Pearce, however, believes it would be better for the 19-year-old in the long-term to represent the Young Lions in their crunch Euro 2015 play-off clash against Croatia.Speaking on talkSPORT last week, the former U-21 boss said: “What should happen is that the senior manager should say to the Under-21 boss, ‘you pick anyone age appropriate that you need and, after that, I’ll take whatever I’ve got’.“That includes Sterling. It’s for the greater good of England.”Barnes agrees with his ex-England teammate that some players should drop down to Gareth Southgate’s young side, but he claims Sterling is too good to do that.He told the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast: “I sympathise and empathise with Stuart and I believe in some cases players should be dropped down to the Under-21s, but I am not sure about Raheem Sterling.“Some of the other players possibly, but once you get to the situation where you are a main England player, then you don’t go down to the Under-21s.“There are other players in the squad available for the Under-21s who I would [drop down], but not Raheem.“Raheem has never been an Under-21 player, he has been an England senior player forever.”last_img read more
