first_img Share Posted by Wednesday, August 23, 2017 Travelweek Group ORLANDO — Tourico Holidays has announced new supplier partnerships with two rental car companies – Advantage Rent A Car and E-Z Rent-A-Car – after seeing a 72% year-over-year increase in overall car rental bookings over the last year.As a result of these new partnerships, the company significantly expands its access to rental car inventory at 85 locations around the U.S., including 22 of the country’s 25 busiest airports. Tourico will sell this new inventory across its network of 2,500 clients located in 95 countries through XML connectivity. The 72% spike in car rental bookings this past year has led to a 53% increase in car rental revenue. This rapid growth is being fuelled by an 87% year-over-year increase in North American bookings, and an 86% year-over-year increase in European bookings. Meanwhile, other key markets – including Canada, Germany and Argentina – have all more than quadrupled their car rental bookings over the last year.More news:  Sunwing ready to launch Mazatlán-Quebec City direct this winter“Tourico is best known for its massive impact on the global hotel industry, but our well-established distribution network and continuously growing inventory of car rental partners puts us in a unique position to become leading players in the car rental sector, as well,” said Konni Marshall, the Director of Business Development for Car Rentals at Tourico Holidays. “After a very strong first half of 2017, adding Advantage and E-Z Rent-A-Car allows us to build on the momentum, while offering our clients new low-cost, high-quality options.”Additionally, Fox Rent A Car, Dollar and Thrifty, which had all previously partnered with Tourico through web-based connection only, established XML connectivity to Tourico’s inventory system this summer. Playing the long game American Airlines outlines its future

first_img Monday, October 2, 2017 DALLAS-FORT WORTH — The future was the theme at American Airlines’ Media and Investor Day on Thursday. “Today is all about investing in the future,” proclaimed Doug Parker, Chairman and CEO, American Airlines to a group of media and investment companies in Dallas-Fort Worth. The world’s largest airline has seen some massive profits since it merged with US Airways in 2013. From 1978 to 2013, both airlines (AA and US Airways) combined saw a collective profit of just $1 billion over the 35 years. In comparison, post merger, the company saw $19.2 billion in profits between 2014-2017.It could be said the company is going through a cyclical lift in profits similar to the massive earnings it saw in the 1990s before a big dip in the 2000s. Parker wanted to ensure investors that’s not the case. “Our industry and our airline have been materially and permanently transformed,” he said.In the past the company could be accused of being reactive to customers; now, it’s taking a long-term view and isn’t going to let competitors or short-term events like Irma affect its strategy.‘Playing the long game’ continued to the be theme of the event with product upgrades, human resources, and technology being identified as the keys to the future success.Doug Parker, Chairman and CEO, American AirlinesBuilding a world-class product“Bet on American [Airlines] because it’s a winning bet,” said Robert Isom, President of the airline. And with aggressive competitors, especially ultra-low-cost carriers (ULCCs), AA is banking on its network, which as the world’s largest can’t be beat. With nine hubs that are strategically placed across the U.S. (Los Angeles, Phoenix, Dallas-Fort Worth, Chicago, Miami, Charlotte, Washington, Philadelphia and NYC), the airline is able to offer 350 destinations, 1,050 nonstops and cater to 35,000 markets. It has also continued to grow the network through partnerships with British Airways and Iberia in Europe, helping it to cater to important business routes like London and Madrid.More news:  Marriott Int’l announces 5 new all-inclusive resorts in D.R. & MexicoThis year AA is also growing in Asia Pacific with a $200 million stake in China Southern, announced in March, as well as a strenghtened relationship with Qantas. With its partnerships AA has a hulking 950 destinations, 2,800 nonstops and caters to 50,000 routes.“On a peak day we have half a million passengers,” said Isom, attributing the airline’s competitive advantage to its growing network. With capacity in place, AA has looked to cabin classes to cater to more client needs. In response to the pressure put on from ULCCs, AA created Basic Economy, a stripped back version of Economy where clients won’t be allowed a carry-on, seat assignment or upgrades.“Basic economy is not a price-cut,” assured Isom. “We offered a product that was far superior than anything else” referring to their pricing compared to other ULCC airlines. “Basic Economy allows us to better compete.”Isom was quick to note that it’s “still a superior product”, with snacks and drinks, service recovery and the option of Wi-Fi, all of which are major benefits compared to ULCCs.Looking at the other end, AA also has Main Cabin Extra and Premium Economy classes, which have helped filled the gap between clients who want more comfort than Economy but can’t afford the price point of Flagship Business or Flagship First.“Our strategy is working,” said Isom, with surveys showing that customer satisfaction is higher and revenue has grown. AA has also added 13,000 new small- to medium-sized business accounts. There’s a lot more to comeUpgrading its aging fleet is a priority for American Airlines, which has the largest fleet modernization project in aviation history starting in Q, 2017. At this time, the first of 550 narrow-body aircraft will be retrofitted with new seats, satellite Wi-Fi, in-seat power and larger overhead bins.AA will also be younger airline with the delivery of 496 new planes and retiring 469 planes. Without significantly increasing plane numbers, it is looking towards operating bigger planes, being able to offer more premium product,s and having more fuel-efficient planes to increase capacity and profits.More news:  Direct Travel names Smith as Senior VP, Leisure Marketing, North AmericaOn the sales end, AA is adding 132 members to its sales team by 2018, and has also relaunched its groups product with simplified contracts and more flexibility. Also, this past March the airline launched a New Distribution Capability (NDC).l-r: Steven Johnson, Executive Vice President – Corporate Affairs; Maya Leibman, Executive Vice President and Chief Information Officer; Robert Isom, President; Doug Parker, Chairman and CEO; Derek Kerr, Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer; Elise Eberwein, Executive Vice President – People and Communications.A team effortAA boasts 120,000 team members with an estimated two million customer interactions a day. After United’s dragging incident, the airline is more than aware how important service interactions are. “Everyone has a weapon called a cellphone now,” said Elise Eberwein, Executive Vice President – People and Communications.Initiatives that have been implemented have increased salaries by 39%. Plus AA has introduced health programs that have seen an average 8-pound weight loss per team member, and has increased maternity leave to 10 weeks from 6 weeks.AA will also be seeing a lot of change within its ranks, with 70% of its pilots looking to retire in the next 10 years.TechnologyBeyond the NDC upgrade, the airline recently launched a new app for clients that offers flight information, baggage notifications, a dynamic rebooking tool and ‘iSolve’, which allows AA to offer vouchers or other benefits to cater to complaints.Beyond the app, Maya Leibman, Executive Vice President and Chief Information Officer reinforced the airline’s commitment to cyber security. It continues to invest in the area to make sure it’s not the next airline to be in the news over a security breach.AA is also looking at machine learning so that when unforeseen issues happen, its back-end programs can switch gears without needing a team to rebuild it.“We are incredibly excited and bullish about our future,” said Parker, who’s confident that the airline isn’t just the world’s largest airline, but also the best. Canadian travel to US up year over year and a banner year

first_imgDomestic overnight travel is expected to grow by 2.9% this year, with slightly lower growth of 2.3% anticipated for 2018.Overnight visits from the U.S. are expected to expand by 2.7% this year and another 2.7% increase is forecast for next year. Canadian travel to U.S. up year over year, and a banner year for inbound Overnight visits to and within Canada are expected to have increased by 3.1% this year, according to The Conference Board of Canada’s latest Travel Markets Outlook for both national and metropolitan cities. More modest but still healthy growth of 2.5% is forecast for 2018. Wednesday, December 20, 2017 This was a record for the month of October and the sixth consecutive October of increased travel during the month by Canadian residents to overseas countries, according to StatsCan. Québec CityWhile tourism activity in Québec City was partly overshadowed by Montréal’s 375th birthday celebrations this year, overnight visits to the city increased by a healthy 3.1% this year. Further growth of 2.7% expected for 2018.More news:  Le Boat has EBBs along with its new 2020 brochure OttawaPleasure travel to the nation’s capital received a solid boost from activities related the 150th anniversary of Confederation. In total, overnight visits to Ottawa-Gatineau are projected to have risen by 5.5% in 2017. While the projections are much more modest for 2018, the volume of overnight visitors should remain elevated, thanks in part to new facilities and the exposure created by the 150th anniversary events, says Hermus. According to the latest numbers from Statistics Canada, on a year-to-date basis travel by Canadians to the U.S. was up 2% from January to October 2017, compared with the same period last year. Car travel by Canadians to the United States was mostly unchanged (-0.1%) from September, but was up slightly (+0.7%) compared with October 2016. Cross-border car travel from Ontario and B.C. were up 1.5% and 2% respectively compared with October 2016, and together these two provinces accounted for more than 75% of all trips to the U.S. by car. There was also a 9.5% increase in the number of overnight plane trips by Canadian residents to the U.S. from January to October, compared to the same period last year. VancouverOvernight visits to Vancouver are forecast to have increased by 3% this year, fuelled by large sporting events and 150th anniversary celebrations. With strong growth from Asian markets, overnight visits are forecast to grow by 3.4% next year. Meanwhile travel from Canada to overseas countries was almost unchanged in October 2017 versus September 2017, at (-0.1%), but up 6.8% compared with October 2016. Share MontréalBuoyed by the many festivals and events celebrating Montréal’s 375th birthday, overall overnight travel will increase by 5.1% this year, second only to Ottawa. Coming off such a strong year, it is not surprising that growth expectations are more modest next year. Still, annual growth of 2.2% or higher is anticipated over the next five years. “The hundreds of events organized in communities across the country to commemorate Canada’s 150th birthday attracted visitors from both near and far, and contributed to a banner year for tourism in 2017,” said Greg Hermus, Associate Director for The Conference Board of Canada’s Canadian Tourism Research Institute. Posted by Overseas visits to Canada are expected to grow by 7.1% this year and are slated to reach 6.2% in 2018. This year, the biggest increase (45.1%) will come from Mexico thanks to a number of factors, including Canada’s decision to lift its visa requirement, an increase in direct air capacity between the two countries, and Donald Trump’s perceived disparaging statements toward Mexico, says Hermus. Next year, travel from China should be stimulated by the Canada-China Year of Tourism, which was initiated to boost tourism flows in both directions.center_img Meanwhile this year’s Canada 150 celebrations, a low Canadian dollar and new flight routes helped propel international visits into Canada to more than 23 million in 2017. EdmontonOvernight visits to Edmonton this year are projected to have expanded by 3.5%, stimulated by attractions such as the recently opened Rogers Centre arena and by a rebound in the provincial economy. Going forward, growth rates should average 2.5% over the next few years. OTTAWA — Canadians took 3.6 million trips to the U.S. in October, a 0.2% decrease from September 2017, but a 2.3% jump from October 2016. CalgaryThis year, overnight visits to Calgary are estimated to increase by 3.6%, with business travel boosted by the recovery of the regional economy. Through to 2021, growth rates of 2.6% or more are projected, supported by solid increases from overseas markets. Of the 10 Canadian cities covered in the Travel Markets Outlook: Metropolitan Focus, most experienced tourism growth between 3% and 5.5% this year. Ottawa-Gatineau and Montreal will have seen the strongest growth in overnight visits this year at 5.5% and 5.1% respectively, while Toronto and Vancouver will have the strongest increase next year at 3.4% each: << Previous PostNext Post >> HalifaxBoosted by the celebration of the 150th anniversary of Confederation and the favourable exchange rate, overnight visits to Halifax are forecast to have expanded by 4% this year. In 2018, overnight visits are projected to increase by 3.1% thanks in part to the opening of the Nova Centre. TorontoOvernight visits to Toronto are expected to have grown at a solid 4% this year. Going forward, the steady expansion of direct air capacity from domestic, U.S., and overseas source markets is projected to remain a major growth driver. St. Catharines-NiagaraLike Ottawa-Gatineau and Toronto, the 150th anniversary of Confederation provided a boost in overnight visits to St. Catharine’s-Niagara, as did the city’s offering of accommodation to athletes from the Invictus Games and their families. Overall, overnight visits to the area are forecast to have increased by 3.1% this year, with more modest growth of 2.8% expected in 2018. WinnipegTourism activity in Winnipeg benefited this year from hosting the 2017 Canada Games, strong convention activity, and the Canada 150 celebrations. All in all, overnight visits are projected to increase 3.2% this year and 2.6% in 2018. More news:  CIE Tours launches first-ever River Cruise Collection“With this major milestone behind us, we can anticipate more subdued growth going forward. However, tourism will continue to be boosted by the low Canadian dollar, increased direct air capacity, and new marketing efforts.” Travelweek Group Canadians made 732,000 overnight trips by plane to the U.S. in October, a decline from September in most provinces and down 0.6% nationally. However the 732,000 trips represents a 7.8% increase compared with October 2016. Tags: USAlast_img read more

Woman forgets baby at airport flight forced to turn back around

first_img<< Previous PostNext Post >> Tuesday, March 12, 2019 Tags: Funny Travelweek Group Sharecenter_img JEDDAH — Kevin McCallister’s mom, brilliantly played by Catherine O’Hara in the movie ‘Home Alone’, is probably the only person who can relate to the woman who recently forgot her baby at the airport.Like the McCallisters, who famously left their son Kevin behind during their mad dash through an airport terminal, the Saudi woman boarded her flight in Jeddah last weekend, not realizing that she had left her baby at the terminal of King Abdul Aziz International Airport.Flight SV832 then took off on time for Kuala Lumpur, sans baby. When the woman realized her mistake, she immediately alerted the flight crew, who then alerted the pilot. The pilot radioed in to air traffic control, requesting to return to the airport.Understandably, the air traffic controller had to ask the pilot to repeat the request, not believing it the first time.“We told you, a passenger left her baby in the terminal and refuses to continue the flight,” the pilot is overheard in a video clip that has since gone viral, reports Gulf News. “May God be with us. Can we come back or what?” the pilot asks.More news:  Universal enhances popular Harry Potter vacation package with new perksThe air traffic controller can then be heard asking a colleague about what the protocol would be in such a situation. After more back-and-forth, he finally gives the go ahead: “Ok, head back to the gate. This is totally a new one for us!”According to radar tracking sites, the flight was delayed by approximately 45 minutes following the mid-air turnaround. No word as to whether the woman was eventually reunited with her baby. Let’s hope the two had a happy reunion, just like Kevin and his mom. Charges are pending against the three others. The probe involved law enforcement in 17 countries and is believed to be the largest money laundering prosecution in history, prosecutors said.Recommended: A Russian patsy or high-tech criminal? False social media posts preceded antiimmigrant protest in Costa Rica

first_img Facebook Comments One day after dozens of people were arrested after a protest in downtown San José, where people expressed their opposition to an influx of Nicaraguan migrants, it appears that a series of fabricated social media posts helped stoke the flames of xenophobia. The daily La Nación reported Sunday that false posts, widely circulated before Saturday’s protest, claimed that Nicaraguans were burning flags, that Nicaraguan military agents were invading the country, that  President Carlos Alvarado had signed a special decree to provide government support for trans women from Nicaragua, and that the University of Costa Rica was providing full scholarships to Nicaraguan refugees. The post about Nicaraguans burning the Costa Rican flag used an image from a punk rock concert in 2016, the daily reported.A total of 44 people were arrested at Saturday’s protests and La Merced Park, site of the protests and a popular gathering place for Costa Rica’s Nicaraguan community, is closed indefinitely, according to the Public Security Ministry.“These violent protests were unprecedented in the history of Costa Rica,” Communications Minister Juan Carlos Mendoza said at a news conference broadcast via Facebook from Casa Presidencial on Saturday, adding that President Alvarado will address the nation on this topic Sunday.Public Security Minister Michael Soto said that 44 people were arrested at the protest.Nicaraguan refugees have arrived in Costa Rica in increasing numbers in recent weeks due to Nicaragua’s ongoing crisis. Myanmar seeks outside help with power outages

first_img Clean energy: Why it matters for Arizona Think Tank analyzes the second round of Democratic debates Comments   Share   Myanmar has suffered from power shortages for more than a decade. It has plentiful natural gas supplies, but a poor power distribution infrastructure that has lagged even more as the economy has grown.Demonstrators in several cities protested the power outages for a week late last month in gatherings that were seen as a test of the tolerance of the reformist government that now rules the country, which is shedding a half-century of military rule.During the peaceful protests, the government made an uncharacteristic appeal for understanding, saying that rationing was required to cope with greater demand and decreased supply during the hot summer months. It also blamed ethnic Kachin rebels for blowing up several electricity pylons that reduced power supplies in several areas.Myanmar has signed several joint ventures with other countries for electricity generation. But “this is the first time the government has invited investment in the country’s electric power distribution,” Han Win Aung from the Myanmar Investment Commission said Saturday. Madrid chosen for EuroVegas gambling resort

first_img Men’s health affects baby’s health too Mary Coyle ice cream to reopen in central Phoenix Former Arizona Rep. Don Shooter shows health improvement Barcelona’s plan would include a casino, six large tourist complexes with 20,000 hotel rooms, shopping centers, a theater and offices, all on land with no planning modifications required. But financing for the resort has not been signed yet.Regional sustainability counselor Lluis Recoder said that project has an advantage over Madrid’s in that it would be built on land that already has street lighting and roads, and be located in one of Spain’s major tourist regions.Adelson’s announcement was not welcomed by Spain’s opposition politicians who said gambling attracts crime and that jobs such as hotel attendants, waiters and blackjack dealers are low paying and a threadbare option for Spain’s many young unemployed citizens. One opposition group, EuroVegas No Platform, said it plans a rally in Madrid’s central Puerta del Sol square on Saturday.Gaming investors have sniffed out Spain before. Harrah’s Entertainment Inc. _ now known as Caesars _ explored the idea of building a Las Vegas-style casino-hotel near the picturesque medieval city of Ciudad Real, 190 kilometers (120 miles) south of Madrid in 2005.Although an airport was built there and the site was reachable in less than an hour by high-speed train from Madrid, nothing came of the plan. Through its majority-owned subsidiary Sands China Ltd., Las Vegas Sands also owns the Venetian Macao and Sands Macao casino resorts, the Plaza Macao hotel, restaurant and shopping complex, and the Sands Cotai Central resort with three hotels and two casinos. The company’s entry into the casino market in the former Portuguese colony near Hong Kong spawned legal battles in Macau and Las Vegas.A Hong Kong businessman won a $43.8 million verdict in a civil lawsuit filed in Nevada in 2004 claiming he was denied a $5 million “success fee” and 2 percent of net casino profits for helping the company win its Macau gambling license. The Nevada Supreme Court in 2010 ordered a retrial. That case is pending.A bruising lawsuit filed in 2010 by Sands Macau’s former top executive, Steven Jacobs, has drawn interest in the company from U.S. Justice Department and Securities and Exchange Commission investigators for possible violation of the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act.The law bars U.S. companies from paying foreign officials to “affect or influence any act or decision” for commercial benefit.Adelson and the company deny wrongdoing and are vigorously defending the case. No charges have been filed. Construction begins on Chandler hospital expansion project Sponsored Stories Comments   Share   Top Stories Associated PressMADRID (AP) – The decision by Las Vegas Sands to choose Madrid for a big “EuroVegas” casino project was welcomed by city officials Saturday, but potential obstacles include the company’s decision to fund only 35 percent of the resort and to demand changes in local laws.Ana Isabel Marino, Madrid’s counselor for planning and environment, said the regional government received the news “with contained satisfaction, given that this is the first step.” Las Vegas Sands Chairman and CEO Sheldon Adelson announced the decision to choose Madrid over Barcelona for the multi-billion dollar gambling resort project on Friday night. With Spain in recession and considering a bailout, raising 65 percent of the cost could be difficult. And there is no guarantee officials would agree to change Spanish laws to let gamblers smoke inside the casinos and the new buildings to soar above the skyline.Analyst Ramon Zarate said, “I see capitalization by banks as being very complicated.”Zarate of the EMASI think-tank said banks were currently de-leveraging construction projects, so Adelson would need to “pool foreign venture capital funds, but it’s complicated.”The Las Vegas Sands statement left some wiggle-room by saying resolution of “current economic challenges” in Europe is still a major consideration.Adelson’s plans had left Madrid and Barcelona _ Spain’s two largest cities _ vying against each other for the casino resort. One official even warned that regional squabbling some 20 years ago had led to EuroDisney being located in France, not Spain. But Barcelona was not to be undone by Vegas. On Friday, the capital of the debt-ridden region of Catalonia unveiled its own plans for a 4.8-billion euro ($6 billion) “Barcelona World” resort situated beside the existing Port Aventura theme park near the Mediterranean Sea.
